What You'll Study in Our Security Guard Certification Programs
We offer three different NY state-approved programs depending on whether you are new to the industry, looking to recertify or keep your certification active.
Our students are diverse and include retired executives, teachers and law enforcement as well as those looking to start a career in security, as there are many opportunities for advancement and promotion.
Sample Courses
8 Hour Pre Assignment
This is a NYS required course and the first step in obtaining a security guard registration
card from the New York State Department of State.
16 Hour On-the-Job Training
Must be completed within 90 days of employment as a security guard. Provides detailed
information on the duties and responsibilities of a security guard.
8 Hour Annual In-Service
Must be completed within 12 calendar months from completion of the 16 Hour On-the-Job
Training course for Security Guards, and annually thereafter.

Although it's not necessary to possess a high school diploma or equivalent to register for this program, it's recommended that you do complete a high school course of study prior to enrolling, as it’s likely to be required by potential employers. Certification
NYS Division of Criminal Justice certifies the training. NYS Department of State issues the license after background check is completed successfully.
Separate from the college tuition, students should expect to spend approximately $230 for the fingerprints and background check required by NYS.

Yes, you’ll need to take the 16 Hour On-the-Job Training Course within 90 days of employment. You will also need to take the 8-Hour Annual In-Service Training class to be completed within 12 calendar months of the 16 Hour course. Both programs are also available at DCC.
