Instrumental & Songwriting Groups


(10 Sessions) Explore the world of jazz improvisation with an ensemble. Students will increase technical facility on their instrument while achieving interactive ensemble playing, including harmonic and rhythmic exploration. Available to intermediate and advanced players of any instrument, from junior high school age through adult. Required textbooks: “The Real Book” 6th Edition (Hal Leonard), and “The Real Easy Book” Level 1, 3-Horn Edition (Sher Music Co.). Interested new students, please call Laura G. (Ages 12 to 17)

(5 Sessions) Students will create original song lyrics and accompaniment, and will also learn to work together to accompany each other’s original songs. This class focuses on editing, music theory, and the analysis of popular songs. Students of all levels welcome!

Both sections 10 and 11 are for students new to the course AND continuing students from previous courses or semesters.

MUX 803      GROUP PIANO FOR BEGINNERS (Ages 16 to adult)

(5 Sessions) In this introductory group class, students will learn basic piano skills through collaboration, one-on-one instruction, and independent practice. Each student will have access to their own keyboard and a combination of music reading and music performance skills will be emphasized. Topics include: correct posture and hand position; using dynamics to play expressively; introduction to the five finger pattern, major scales, and common chords; using the pedals; and reading standard piano notation.
