Ensembles

Community members will not receive college credit for the Chorus or Orchestra courses; if you would like to receive college credit you must enroll at DCC Registrar’s office by calling (845) 431-8020. 


MUX 703       CHORUS (AGES 14 TO ADULT) ONLINE

(15 Sessions) Are you a soprano? Alto? Tenor? Bass? Sing in a variety of musical styles from contemporary choral pieces to choral classics like Mendelssohn’s “Elijah.” This large ensemble of 40+ members is open to everyone who has had some singing experience and would like an opportunity to improve their ability to blend, phrase and work together in a musical group. This semester Chorus will be online, so instead of traditional group singing, students will learn techniques on how to be an effective choral singer, critique performances, touch upon the history of choral music and sing in sectional rehearsals via Zoom on repertoire for the spring semester.

MUX 700       ORCHESTRA (AGES 14 TO ADULT) ONLINE

(16 Sessions) Do you like Beethoven, Brahms and Wagner as well as Broadway musical medleys? The group is open to individuals playing flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, violin, viola, cello, double bass or percussion at a NYSSMA level 4 or higher. Members are expected to supply their own instruments in working condition. In partnership with the Mid-Hudson Community orchestra this group usually has 50+ members. New members must contact Dr. Brellochs at christopher.brelloc@sunydutchess.edu to submit a video of their playing before the first class. This semester Orchestra will be online, so instead of traditional group playing students will learn how to record their parts individually so that they can be combined into a remote orchestral performance.

MUX 540      COMMUNITY JAZZ ENSEMBLE (AGES 14 TO ADULT) ONLINE

(12 Sessions) Explore the world of jazz improvisation with an ensemble. Students will increase technical facility on their instrument while achieving interactive ensemble playing, including harmonic and rhythmic exploration. Available to intermediate and advanced players of any instrument.  Interested new students, please call Laura Doe at laura.doe@sunydutchess.edu or (845) 431-8916.  Section 25 is for beginners and returning beginners; Section 26 is for advanced students.

Required textbooks: "The Real Book” 6th Edition (Hal Leonard), and "The Real Easy Book” Level 1, 3-Horn Edition (Sher Music Co.).

MUX 804     PIANO ENSEMBLE (AGES 12 TO ADULT) ONLINE

(6 Sessions) In this group class, students will prepare piano ensemble repertoire for performance. Opportunities to play piano duets, piano four-hands, and other combinations are possible. Students of varying levels are welcome, including intermediate and advanced players. A combination of performance skills, listening skills, and expressive techniques will be emphasized. The class will culminate in an online recital. Strong music reading skills encouraged. No class 11/28.

CHAMBER MUSIC ENSEMBLES & COMBOS (All ages)  ONLINE / 4 or 12 Sessions

Do you want to sing in a barbershop quartet, play in a jazz combo or string quartet, rock out with a band? Chamber Music Ensembles and Combos are available in any style or instrumentation from classical/jazz to contemporary/pop styles. If you are interested in creating a group or have one already formed contact laura.doe@sunydutchess.edu.

All members of the group will register for a 30-minute lesson package and then pool their lesson time to meet once a week with a professional coach:

  • 2 members = 1 hour per week

  • 3 members = 1.5 hours per week

  • 4+ members = 2 hours per week

Date/time of lessons to be determined between group members and professional coach.
