Placement Tests

Notice: The Testing Center at the Poughkeepsie campus is under a phased reopening based on the guidance of SUNY, New York State, Dutchess County, and Dutchess Community College administration. Face mask, photo ID, and completed health screening questionnaire, will be required when coming on campus. Appointments are required; the College is not permitted to proctor walk-in testing at this time. Due to social distancing, ONLY the student will be allowed into the Testing Center at the appointment time. Currently, there is no availability for testing at Dutchess @ Fishkill. The College also continues to administer tests remotely (online).

Please do not schedule an appointment for Placement Testing unless instructed to do so.

Remote (Online) Placement Testing:

Remote (Online) Testing Services Hours:

  • Monday, Thursday, and Friday: 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

  • Tuesday and Wednesday: 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Appointments are required for all tests. Appointments must be scheduled a minimum of two days (48 hours) prior to the desired test date. Appointments are in 90-minute blocks of time. If more time is needed for a test, students should book multiple consecutive appointments. Students will need access to a computer, iPad or tablet that has a web camera and a microphone to take a test remotely (online). Valid photo ID is also required.

Standard information below may vary during the COVID-19 pandemic remote teaching and learning period.

To ensure academic success in college, it's important that full-time and matriculated part-time students are placed into classes that are consistent with their current level of academic ability. This is why some students must take placement tests prior to registering for classes. Some students may be exempt from certain tests; the Admissions Office will determine which, if any, placement tests are needed.

Valid photo ID is required for all testing.

  • English Course Placement: WritePlacer Essay (ACCUPLACER) – 90 minutes

  • Math Course Placement: Lumen OHM – untimed

  • Biology (Anatomy and Physiology sequence): Science Test – 40 minutes

  • Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) Placement: Reading (ACCUPLACER) – untimed

  • English as a Second Language Course Placement: Versant English Language Placement – 50 minutes

  • English as a Second Language Course Placement: Pearson English Paper Placement – untimed

  • Spanish Course Placement: WebCAPE – untimed

  • Ability to Benefit: Classic ACCUPLACER – untimed

Testing Accommodations

All accommodations MUST be approved by the Office of Accommodative Services prior to scheduling placement tests with the Office of Academic Service and Testing.

Contact OAS at accommodativeservices@sunydutchess.edu for information regarding documentation requirements needed to establish accommodations. Students will be notified in writing of approved accommodations.

Accommodations are not retroactive. Students who choose to take the placement test without accommodations may not re-take the placement test with accommodations.

DCC Re-testing Policy

Students may re-test after one year or if approved by the Coordinator of Testing or after completing a significant and approved academic intervention.

Placement test results are valid for 2.5 years.
