Initiative delivers financial support and community engagement for DCC students

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — AUG. 6, 2024 — Dutchess Community College is proud to announce its participation in the Empire State Services Corps (ESSC), an initiative developed in partnership between the State University of New York (SUNY) and New York State to provide students with paid service learning opportunities while addressing critical community needs. Both student and site applications are now open, with a student application deadline of September 6.

As part of the ESSC initiative, DCC will have 7 positions available for students, allowing them to gain practical experience and financial support through involvement in various key areas:

  • K-12 Tutoring: Assisting students in K-12 schools with academic support and mentorship.
  • SNAP and Basic Needs Outreach: Helping individuals access Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and other essential resources.
  • Peer Mental Health: Providing support and resources to enhance mental health and well-being among peers.
  • Sustainability: Engaging in projects focused on environmental conservation and sustainability.
  • Anti-Hate and Bias Prevention: Working on initiatives to prevent hate and bias through educational programs and community outreach.
  • Civic Engagement: Promoting active participation in community service and local governance.
  • FAFSA Completion: Assisting students with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to secure financial aid.

The first ESSC cohort will begin in Fall 2024, supported by a $2.75 million allocation in the 2025 New York State Enacted Budget. This funding ensures that participants receive stipends for their 300 hours of service, emphasizing the state’s commitment to fostering civic engagement and community service among students.

A site application is also available for community organizations and agencies interested in hosting ESSC participants, providing opportunities for students to engage in meaningful service projects.

DCC President Dr. Peter Grant Jordan said, “We are excited to offer our students the opportunity to participate in the Empire State Services Corps. This initiative showcases how DCC, with the support of the New York State government and the State University of New York (SUNY), in collaboration with many of our community partners, can fuel active learning through public and community service. It not only provides our students with invaluable hands-on experience but also reinforces the four lenses of our strategic plan: students, learning, community and growth.”
