Heritage Months
We're All In This Together
DCC seeks to foster understanding and promote the values of diversity, equity and inclusion. One way we do this is by observing Heritage Months in which we commemorate, celebrate and engage with scholarship and creative contributions of historically marginalized individuals and groups in the United States.
Black History Month
Each February, DCC proudly celebrates Black History Month, a time for focused recognition of the tremendous contributions of Black Americans, with events organized by our Black History Committee. In 2024, DCC hosted a series of events on the College’s main campus – covering a range of subjects from Science, Technology and Engineering (STEM) to reproductive rights and supporting justice-involved youth and featuring award-winning author Dr. Emily Bernard (pictured).
Women's History Month
In March, DCC honors the diverse histories and achievements of women, with programming developed by our Women’s Activities Committee. Each year, DCC hosts a “Reading Women” event in which participants recite literary selections from any woman-identifying author whose work aligns with the annual theme provided by the National Women’s History Alliance. The College also hosts an annual Women in STEM (in 2023, STEAM) panel, along with other events throughout the month.
Hispanic Heritage Month
Between September 15 and October 31, DCC observes National Hispanic Heritage Month in recognition of legacies and achievements of the Latinx community. DCC has hosted diverse events for the College and outside community featuring scholars, poets, filmmakers and musicians. Previous speakers include: Gladys Aponte, Aurelio Del Muro, Daicy Diaz-Granado, Deborah Paredez, Fernando Valencia, Sinuhe Padilla and Radio Jarocho.
