Special Scholarships

(These scholarships are offered to students registering at DCC for the 2009-2010 academic year.)

Applications will be available online on January 5, 2009. Deadline for submission is March 6, 2009.


Academic Achievement Scholarship

One award of $500
This scholarship was initiated by the 2001-02 Educationally Disadvantaged Student Committee, a standing committee of the Professional Staff Organization at DCC. The scholarship is awarded to a student who has completed 30 credits or more at DCC, six of which must be credit equivalent (courses with a less than 100 designation.)


The American Association for Women in Community Colleges Scholarship

One award of $550 and One award of $500

This scholarship is given by the DCC chapter of this national organization, which encourages leadership and cooperation among women in community colleges. The $550 scholarship is awarded to a full-time returning female student with at least 24 credits completed and a CPA 3.00. The $500 scholarship is awarded to a returning female student with at least 24 credits and a 3.00 GPA. An essay entitled "Where I see myself in five years" is required with the application for either scholarship.


The Alumni Association Second Generation Scholarship

One award of $1,500

The Alumni Association Second Generation Scholarship is awarded to a second-year student whose parent, guardian, grandparent, child or grandchild is a DCC alum.


Trudy Hankinson Briggs AAWU Scholarship

One Award of $500

This scholarship was established by Mr. Ken Briggs, husband of Trudy Hankinson Briggs. Trudy taught for 25 years in the Poughkeepsie and Wappingers Falls school districts and served as principal of Vassar Road Elementary School for seven years. She served as president of the American Association of University Women and was a community activist.This scholarship is awarded to a full or part-time, 2nd year student who has proven academic success and some community service.


William J. Buckner Exempt Firemen’s Scholarship

Two awards of $1,000

William J. Buckner served as President of the Exempt Firemen’s Association for over 20 years.  He was a volunteer firefighter for the city of Poughkeepsie Fire Department, serving in the O.H. Booth Hose Company.  Mr. Buckner passed away in September of 2007.  Upon his death, members of the Association voted to name the scholarship the “William J. Buckner Memorial Scholarship” in honor of his dedication to the association.  His favorite slogan was “Imagine That!”  The first scholarship is awarded to a firefighter or the child of a firefighter in good standing at any fire district in Dutchess County.  The recipient must be a second year student with a CPA of 2.50 or higher and write an essay on the importance of fire prevention and education.

The second recipient must be a member of the Exempt Firemen’s Association or the son or daughter of a member.  The recipient must be a second year student with a CPA of 2.50 or higher and write an essay on the importance of fire prevention and education.


Phyllis L. Cady Memorial Scholarship

One award of $550
This scholarship was established by the estate of the late Phyllis L. Cady. It was stated in Ms. Cady's will that the freshman awarded this scholarship "shall believe in the principles of the United States Government and his or her manner of being shall be in conformity with the standards of society." In addition, the applicant must be a full-time matriculated student who is academically motivated, and who has achieved a 3.00 grade point average with at least 20 academic credits.


Dr. D. David Conklin Scholarship for Student Leadership

One Award of $1,000

This scholarship was established by Dr. D. David Conklin, president of Dutchess Community College. It is awarded each year to the incoming Student Government President in recognition of the skills and commitment that are needed to effectively lead and represent the student body.


Alexander Cutonilli Memorial Scholarship

One award of $500
Alexander Cutonilli served in the DCC Admissions Office from 1967 until his untimely death in 1994. A Hyde Park resident, he was committed to his community, students, and the Dutchess County Counseling Association. His friends, family and colleagues established this scholarship in his memory, to be given to a full-time, second-year Dutchess County student who has demonstrated community involvement.


Sadie and William Effron Scholarship

One award of $500

This scholarship was established by the children of the Effrons to honor their parents' contributions to DCC and the community. The scholarship is awarded to a non-traditional student attending DCC on a part-time basis.


Nan Gingher Memorial Scholarship

One award of $1,500
Nancy "Nan" Gingher was a lifetime resident of Shenanigan Farm in Stanfordville, N.Y. and a long-time Psychotherapist and staff member at Dutchess Community College until her retirement in 1989. She was a devoted member of the Spina Bifida Association and an active and tireless supporter of students with disabilities. This scholarship will be awarded to a student who is eligible to receive disability services at the college and who has a physical or mobile disability. The applicant must be a matriculated student who has acquired 12 or more academic credits with at least a 2.50 grade point average. An essay is required.


Bernard Handel Annual Community Service Scholarship

One award of $1,000

The scholarship will be awarded to a 2nd year Dutchess student who is involved in community service work.


JFK Scholarship

One award of $340

This scholarship is funded by the Community Foundation of Dutchess County in honor of President John F. Kennedy. The scholarship is awarded to a second-year female student who has graduated from a Dutchess County high school. The major criteria for this award is academic achievement and financial need.


Helen and Henry Katula Memorial Scholarship

Two awards of $500
Maryanne Keller-Chai, DCC's 1984 Commencement speaker, established this scholarship in honor of her parents, Helen and enry Katula. It is awarded to a full-time, second-year student who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and leadership skills.


The Mazzetti Family Scholarship

One award of $1,000
This scholarship is funded through the friends and family of John Mazzetti, retired executive director of the DCC Foundation. This scholarship is awarded to an Ulster County resident (preference to a Highland High School graduate) who is a traditional student who has earned 20 or more degree credits with at least a 2.5 GPA. The applicant must also be a student athlete participating in a DCC team sport or the Dance Club.


Mid-Hudson Sikh Cultural Society - September 11 Scholarship One award of $500
This scholarship was established by the Mid-Hudson Sikh Cultural Society to honor those who volunteered during the national September 11th tragedy. It is awarded to a student matriculated in any degree program who has achieved at least 20 credits with at least a 2.50 GPA. Community volunteerism must be an important part of this student's life.

 


Mid-Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union Scholarship
One award of $500

This scholarship was established by the Mid-Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union to help local students who are members of the credit union attend DCC. It is awarded to a full-time student who is academically motivated.


Mid-Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union Community Service Scholarship
One award of $500

This scholarship was established to help local students who are members of the credit union attend DCC. It is awarded to full-time student who is academically motivated and demonstrates a commitment to community.


The Moody Family Scholarship

One award of $500
F. Kennon Moody served as a teacher and administrator at DCC from 1974 until 1997. He and his wife Mary established this scholarship. It is awarded to a non-traditional, second-year full-time student enrolled in a degree or certificate program who has not attended a post-secondary institution other than DCC in the last five years.


Nine Partners Lions Club Scholarship

One award of $500
This scholarship has been established by the members of this Lions Club for a second-year student who resides in the Town of Clinton, Dutchess County, NY. The applicant must have at least a 3.00 GPA.


 

Catherine Reeck Shanks Scholarship
One award of $1,000

This scholarship has been funded by The George T. Whalen, Jr. Foundation to honor Catherine Reeck Shanks, a founding officer of the Foundation and a 1979 graduate of Dutchess Community College. It is awarded to a full-time, second-year student who is academically motivated with preference to residents of the Millbrook School District.


  Rhinebeck Savings Bank Scholarship
One award of $2,500

This award is for a second-year student from either Dutchess or Ulster counties who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and has a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Financial need is a consideration.

 

George A. Strba Charitable Trust Endowment Scholarship

Two Awards of $1,400

The George A. Strba Charitable Trust has established this scholarship to be awarded each year to two graduates of Poughkeepsie High School who will be entering their second year at Dutchess Community College.
