DCC Safety Day to be Held on Anniversary of 9/11 Attacks

Dutchess Community College has scheduled its DCC Safety Day for September 11 at 12:30 p.m. on the main campus walkway outside Dutchess Hall. The aim of the program is to educate students about how they can make safer choices in life. Different stations will offer information about personal safety and health, alcohol awareness, sexual violence prevention, self defense, fire safety, and more.

The Dutchess Community College Music School’s Second Annual Sing-a-Thon/Play-a-Thon will be held from 2-5 p.m. Saturday, August 2 in the James and Betty Hall Theatre in Dutchess Hall on DCC’s main campus in Poughkeepsie. The event will serve as a fundraiser for the College’s MusicLink Scholarship Fund, which provides professional music instruction to economically disadvantaged children K-12.

DCC Graduate Awarded Criminal Justice Scholarship

Brooke Kaase, an honors student who graduated from Dutchess Community College last week, is the recipient of the New York State Sheriff’s Association Institute’s 2008 Criminal Justice Scholarship. The $500 award is given out annually to a full-time Criminal Justice major from each community college in New York State. Candidates for the scholarship must not only stand out academically, but demonstrate a financial need as well.

One hundred and thirty seven scholarship awards were handed out at Dutchess Community College’s Honors Convocation on May 15. More than $100,000 in scholarship money was awarded to students this year, and more than $715,000 has been given in the Convocation ceremonies since they began 12 years ago.

Film by DCC Alumnus to Open in New York and California May 30

Dutchess Community College graduate Chris Bell’s Film “Bigger, Stronger, Faster*” will make its 31-theater premiere in New York and California on May 30. The opening follows the film’s success at the Sundance Film Festival, the Full Frame Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Festival. The movie is scheduled for a wider release on June 6.

DCC's Class of 2008 Getting Ready for Graduation

On May 15, Dutchess Community College will graduate almost 900 students at its 49th Commencement. The Class of 2008 includes graduates ranging in age from 17 to 59, with a median age of 22. Eighty percent reside in Dutchess County, 19% are residents of other counties and states, and 1% are from foreign countries. Sixty-three-and-a-half percent of the class are women, and 36.5 % are men.

More Than 170 Schools to Visit DCC's College Night

Dutchess Community College will host College Night on May 8, with more than 170 schools from New York State and beyond expected to participate. The fair is designed to give potential students information about many different colleges, their scholarship and financial aid opportunities, and possible career paths available following graduation. College Night is open to high school juniors, seniors, parents, college students who are transferring, adult and non-traditional learners, and high school counselors.

DCC Fire Science Program Members to Perform Hose Evaluations

Dutchess Community College Fire Science program members will perform a fire hose/nozzle evaluation session on April 19 from 8 a.m. to noon in Parking Lot E on DCC’s main campus in Poughkeepsie. Local fire departments will get the opportunity to work with DCC program members to ensure their equipment is adjusted in such a way that firefighters are getting the specific water flow they need to fight fires.

Twenty-first Annual Brazilian Jazz Concert Coming to DCC

Matt Finley and Rio JAZZ will once again bring the sounds of Brazilian Jazz to Dutchess Community College when the group performs on April 8. The show will be the 21st annual performance from Finley and company, and the set list will be dedicated to Kelly Conner, an assistant professor of music at DCC who died in the summer of 2007. Finley and Conner performed together often, and Conner’s piece “In the Mist” will be performed by Rio JAZZ on April 8, along with other selections Professor Conner enjoyed playing.

Building Anticipation: Lego League Tournament Coming to DCC

Dutchess Community College will host the region’s first ever Lego League Robotics competition for children ages 6-14 on Feb. 2 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in DCC’s Falcon Hall. The FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego League Robotics competition is made up of teams of children charged with using Legos to build small robots that will complete specific energy conservation-themed missions.

DCC Announces Findings of 50-Year Socio-Economic Impact Study

Dr. D. David Conklin, president of Dutchess Community College, today announced the results of a recently completed study that defines the College’s socio-economic impact on Dutchess County over the past 50 years. The study, conducted by CCBenefits Inc. of Moscow, Idaho, determined that the Dutchess County economy is $807.4 million stronger annually as a direct result of DCC’s past and current impact on the county. According to Dr. Conklin, this figure represents 7.5% of Dutchess County’s total income each year.

Ten local students received awards in the 15th Annual Dutchess Community College High School Architectural Design Competition. Monetary awards in the amounts of $250 for first place, $150 for second place, $100 for third place, $50 for fourth place and $25 for fifth place were given.  Five merit awards were also presented.

Two DCC Students Nominated to Phi Theta Kappa All-USA Academic Team

Dutchess Community College graduates Dmitriy Yermolayev of Poughkeepsie and Matthew Murray of Hyde Park were honored at the annual DCC Convocation on Thursday, May 17 for their nomination to the Phi Theta Kappa All-USA and All-State Academic Teams. Yermolayev and Murray were also honored last month by the State University of New York Chancellor John R. Ryan and New York Community College Trustees Association President Anton N. Kasanof for their inclusion in the New York State All-Academic Team – Yermolayev as a member of the First Team, Murray the Second Team. Yermolayev and Murray were also awarded DCC Alumni Association Graduate Scholarships at the Convocation on Thursday.

SUNY’s One Millionth Community College Graduate Also Recognized

Dutchess Community College graduated 965 students today at its 48th commencement exercises and kicked off the celebration of its 50th anniversary. In addition, the College recognized a milestone in the history of the State University of New York – the awarding of SUNY’s one millionth community college degree.  DCC selected graduate and student trustee, Janet Brendli, to be its symbolic one millionth degree recipient.

Three DCC Students in Best of SUNY Art Show

The artwork of three Dutchess Community College students has been selected for inclusion in the 2007 Best of SUNY Student Art Exhibition, which opens Saturday, May 19 at the New York State Museum in Albany. The 2007 Best of SUNY Student Art Exhibition showcases the work of SUNY’s top student artists from across the state. This juried show features 75 works selected from the more than 200 pieces in the fall and spring SUNY student art shows held at the State University Plaza in downtown Albany during the past academic year.

Adult Musicians Rekindle Passion For Their Craft in DCC Early Music Ensemble

It’s not their day job. Flutist Frank De Leeuw is an economist and consultant. Viola da gamba player Howard Pepperman is a computer programmer. Violist Jeremy Duckles tunes and restores pianos. Violist cellist Nancy Hull, who first picked up her instrument as an adult, ran a health food store. Together, with the guidance of professional early music specialist Kumiko Imamura, they have become the Dutchess Community College Music School Early Music Ensemble.

DCC Alumni Association Awards Second Generation Scholarships

The Dutchess Community College Alumni Association has presented Second Generation Scholarships to Richard A. Johnson, Jr. of Gardiner and Madeleine Jane Ouellette of Millbrook. Each year, the Alumni Association awards one or more scholarships of $1,475 to first-time, full-time students planning to enroll at DCC whose parent, guardian, grandparent, child or grandchild is a DCC alumnus. The qualified student may be graduating from high school or a current DCC student, must demonstrate academic achievement, and must register for 12 or more credits for the fall semester.

Brockway and Campion Inducted into DCC Alumni Hall of Fame

Dutchess Community College added two new inductees to its Alumni Hall of Fame at a ceremony on Friday, April 27 at Dutchess Hall at the DCC main campus in Poughkeepsie. Pawling resident Betsy H. Brockway, class of ’82, the director of the Dutchess County Health and Human Services Cabinet, and Livingston resident and Hyde Park native James Campion, class of ’70, the president of Columbia-Greene Community College, were selected for this year’s honor. The DCC Alumni Association also celebrated the reunion classes of 1976, 1977, 1982, 1987 and 1997 at a dinner at the Culinary Institute of America’s Saint Andrew’s Café following the Alumni Hall of Fame dedication.

DCC and Vassar Students Win Awards As “Tough Americans” at National Model UN

Students from Dutchess Community College and Vassar College, who collaborated through an intercollegiate class to form the joint Hudson River Group delegation to the National Model United Nations, walked away from the conference as winners of the Outstanding Position Papers, Distinguished Delegation, and Outstanding Delegate awards. They also won a reputation as the “tough Americans” among more than 2,000 student delegates who participated in the Model UN session held March 20-24 at the New York Marriott Marquis.

DCC Offers New Credential for Fitness Class Teachers

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – In an effort to raise the standards required for individuals to become leaders of group exercise classes, Dutchess Community College’s Department of Health, Physical Education, Athletics and Dance will begin offering a “Group Fitness Leader Credential” in fall 2007. This 26-credit curriculum is designed to prepare instructors to teach a variety of group exercise classes and/or help prepare them for national group exercise leader certification exams. Dutchess Community College offers a program for people currently working in the child care field who want to earn a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential. The Louis Greenspan Day Care Center at Dutchess Community College celebrates the Week of the Young Child, which will be observed across the country April 22 through 28 by hundreds of local organizations that work to improve opportunities for all young children. DCC Earth Day Promotes Alternative Fuels with BioTour Bus

The BioTour bus rolls onto the Dutchess Community College campus for an early Earth Day celebration on Thursday, April 19, from 12:00-2:00 p.m. at Main Campus Walkway. The bus, which is on a 10,000-mile, 100-day tour through the Northeast, is a 1989 International Bluebird school bus with an unaltered six-cylinder diesel engine running on biodiesel and waste vegetable oil.

Pougkeepsie, NY – Sudanese Lost Boy Valentino Achak Deng – the subject of the new novel What is the What by Dave Eggers – will speak at Dutchess Community College on Friday, April 20 at 12:00 noon in the James and Betty Hall Theater, Dutchess Hall. Deng will discuss his experiences as a refugee in the civil war in Sudan, his view of the current situation in Sudan and Dafur, and the process of collaborating on the novel about his life. Sherlock Holmes Falls in Love at DCC, April 12 through 15

Poughkeepsie, NY – Sherlock Holmes suffers a rare case of falling in love at Dutchess Community College in the DCC Performing Arts Program production of Sherlock Holmes or The Strange Case of Alice Faulkner. The classic play by William Gillette is co-directed by Steve Press and DCC Alumna Blair Wing and marks the 120th anniversary of the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes. Dutchess Community College will salute its Curriculum Advisory Committees at a dinner on campus and honor several members for their long-time commitment on Thursday, April 5, 2007 at 5:30 p.m. One Curriculum Advisory Committee member – Architect John C. Morgan – will be honored for 35 years of service to the College and community. The Curriculum Advisory Committees are key partners in the delivery of educational programs at DCC. Fifteen advisory committees meet twice a year – once in the fall and once in the spring – providing a vital link between the community and DCC’s vocational and technical programs.

DCC Music School Faculty Concert Features New Sound: Blue Grass

The Dutchess Community College Music School’s next Group Faculty Concert will feature the new sound of the Bluegrass ensemble No Brakes, as well as a mix of classical, jazz, folk, pop, and American musical theater music, on Saturday, April 14 at 4:00 p.m. in the Ritz Lounge, Dutchess Hall, at the main campus in Poughkeepsie. The DCC Music School concert series supports the school’s MusicLink Scholarship Fund, which provides free lessons for economically disadvantaged children. John Jay Junior Wins 48th Annual Dutchess County Regional Science Fair at DCC

John Jay Junior Zhong Zhuang took first place in the senior division of the 48th Regional Science Fair held Saturday, March 24 at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie. The College hosted the fair and was a major contributor, providing exhibit space and facilities. Zhuang’s project comparing ethanol and gasoline showed, among other things, that ethanol actually produces more nitrogen oxide pollution, but less carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide pollution. Zhuang’s win earns him an all-expense-paid trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico to compete in the International Science and Engineering Fair, which will be held May 13 through 18, 2007.

Deadline Nears for DCC High School Essay Competition

The April 1 deadline is nearing for the annual High School Essay Competition sponsored by the Dutchess Community College Department of English and Humanities and the Mid-Hudson English/Language Arts Council. The competition is open to students in grades 9 through 12 from throughout the Mid-Hudson area. Funded in part by the DCC Foundation Mini-Grant program, the competition was developed to foster a close relationship between DCC English faculty and English teachers at local high schools. DCC Partners with Empire State Water Well Drillers on Training Programs

Dutchess Community College Office of Community Services is partnering with The Empire State Water Well Drillers to offer formal training programs designed to assist candidates prepare for New York pump installer certification. Founding Faculty Grant Connects Poughkeepsie High Students and DCC Music School

Allyn J. Washington, one of the founding faculty members of Dutchess Community College, is now helping to bring the next generation of students onto the campus. Professor Emeritus Washington has provided a $10,000 gift to the DCC Music School through the DCC Foundation. The funding has allowed the development of a new program connecting Poughkeepsie High School with the College’s noncredit music education program.

The Dutchess Community College Foundation and the DCC Alumni Association are seeking applicants for the Second Generation Scholarship, which provides one award each year for a semester of tuition at DCC (not including books, fees or other costs). DCC Director Sheds Light on Doctoral Research

Dr. Rita Weber-McKee, the Director of Academic Services and Testing at Dutchess Community College, recently presented a seminar called The Dos and Don’ts on Doctoral Research at SUNY New Paltz. Dr. Weber-McKee co-presented the program with Dr. Donna Berger. Dr. Weber-McKee and Dr. Berger were the first two graduates from the joint doctoral program between SUNY New Paltz and the University at Albany, Department of Educational Administration and Policy Studies.

Campilii, the retired Vice President for Business Affairs and Chief Financial Officer of Marist College. Campilii, who graduated from DCC with an A.A.S. in Business Administration in 1960, earned his B.A. in Business Administration from Marist in 1962, and his M.B.A. from Marist in 1979.
